I'm teaching a class on Organizational Behavior this semester for the first time in ten years and have been searching for various experiential exercises and activities to use in the three hour night class. Dr. Larry Inks (The Ohio State University) suggested I use the documentary, Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure to illustrate leadership. I decided to make it a team project. I showed the 40 minute video at the beginning of class and then had them do a team paper in class that was to be emailed to me at the end of the class period. They were instructed to bring at least one laptop per team along with their textbook and class notes. I gave them the following instructions:
Objective: To tie together the various concepts, theories, and terminology (jargon) you have learned in the OB class so far and connect/relate these to this real world situation.
Guidelines for Team Paper: First do a quick summary of video and assignment (1-2 paragraphs). Then tie to OB topics such as leadership, personality traits, conflict, power, teams, and decision making using specific examples from the video and terms from the textbook and class notes. At the end of paper, do a short summary of what learned, and how this video could be used as a teaching or training tool. Use spell check and remember impression management!
It was very interesting to walk around the room and watch the process. Lots of discussion of terms, what they meant, and how the video illustrated these. I'd be curious as to how others use videos in the classroom...
