This is the assessment I have my students do each semester as the initial forum in my online classes. They take this survey, and then when they post to introduce themselves tell us all what the survey says and whether they agree. I do a more extensive one for my on-site classes too.
In both cases it gives me an idea of what kind of learners dominate the class (a large group of social learners means active forums!).

Hi Lisa,
Have you tried this one on learning styles? I sometimes use it at the beginning of a class to help my students understand what they need to do to take responsibility for their own learning.
